Bird Critiques IOC Policy Change

Basketball Hall of Famer Sue Bird has pushed back against the notion that the International Olympic Committee’s recent policy changes are meant to safeguard women’s sports.

In a discussion, Bird echoed sentiments shared by Nikki Hiltz, a transgender and non-binary Olympic runner, asserting that the IOC isn’t addressing the real issues at hand. She described the policy as merely “fear-mongering.”

“This issue isn’t as significant as it’s being made out to be,” Bird mentioned during an interview with Megan Rapinoe on the “A Touch More” podcast. “It feels like a political maneuver, and frankly, it’s just about rallying votes. That’s my takeaway here.”

Bird also expressed concern, stating, “Opening this door doesn’t mean we’ll start infringing on women’s bodies everywhere.” She emphasized her sadness over the situation, wanting to convey support for the trans community.

Beginning the episode, Rapinoe broke from IOC norms, contending that the organization’s stance lacks scientific backing.

The IOC has indicated that eligibility for women’s events is currently restricted to biological females, determined by specific genetic screening methods. They claim this policy is grounded in expert input and evidence.

There has been awareness of a notable “overrepresentation” of athletes with differences in sex development (DSD) among finalists, suggesting a need for further gender testing, according to reports from the World Athletics Committee.
