Sunday shows preview: Biden campaign chaos continues; Trump veepstakes in view

This week’s Sunday news programs are likely to focus on the continuing fallout from President Biden’s shaky debate performance last month and former President Trump’s selection of his running mate.

Biden, his campaign and the White House are still reeling from the fallout from his performance in last month’s presidential debate, in which he stuttered and croaked, raising concerns within Biden’s party about his age, mental health and ability to hold down the presidency.

Several Democrats in both the House and Senate are now calling on the president to drop out of the race in 2024. Despite the growing calls for Biden to drop out of the race, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) offered a strong defense of the president on CNN’s “State of the Union” this week.

Fetterman said he disagreed with his friend, Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vermont, who called on Biden to drop out of the race on Wednesday, becoming the first senator to do so.

“Senator Welch is a good friend of mine and he’s the nicest guy in Washington, and I’ve said that publicly,” Fetterman said, “so I actually disagree with my friend.”

Biden said at a press conference Thursday night that he believes he is “the best qualified person to run for president.”

“I believe I’m the best person to govern,” he later added, “and the best person to win. But there are other people who can beat Trump. But it’s all starting from scratch. And, you know, we’re talking about the money we’ve raised. We’re not bad.”

“Let’s start there. Number one,” he continued, “the fact is, the consideration is that I believe I am the best qualified person to run for president. I beat him once and I intend to win again.”

While Biden and his campaign continue to deal with backlash from their debate struggles, Republicans are gearing up for the start of the Republican National Convention, which begins in Milwaukee on Monday.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley said late last month that Republicans plan to “lay out a vision for America” at the Republican National Convention.

“We’re going to have a great convention. I’m really looking forward to it. We’ll have 50,000 delegates, guests and members of the media in Milwaukee to see us put forward a vision for an overwhelmingly positive America,” Whatley, who will appear on “Fox News Sunday” this week, said at the time.

Trump said there was a “high probability” that he would announce his running mate at the party convention.

“I think it’s probably a pretty good chance. I wouldn’t say 100 percent, but we’re pretty close. We’re going to do it in Milwaukee. We’re going to have a great time,” Trump said in an interview published in May.

Trump aides and allies have said in recent days that North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (R-Ohio), Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) are seen as the leading candidates for the vice presidential spot.
