Sunday shows preview: House GOP infighting on full display as Congress narrowly averts shutdown

Congress narrowly avoided a government shutdown on Saturday, sending a $1.2 trillion government funding bill to President Biden after a week of frantic negotiations, which will likely be the focus of this Sunday’s talk shows. .

The House passed the bill on Friday with a bipartisan vote of 286-134. The bill includes six funding bills and was sent to the Senate hours before various agencies and programs faced funding shortfalls. Early Saturday morning, the Senate passed the bill by a vote of 74-24.

The successful vote brings to an end the fiscal year 2024 spending process that lasted months after extensions, the historic ouster of the chairman, and bitter internal fighting within the Republican Party. But Friday’s vote was not without drama.

After the House voted to pass the bill, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) filed a motion to remove Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), calling it a “warning.” called. Greene will appear on FOX’s “Sunday Morning Futures” this week, where she will discuss her dissatisfaction with the bill and Johnson’s leadership.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who was ousted from leadership in October after conservative hardliners filed a motion to remove him from office, appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and revealed that he was are likely to talk about their support. His multi-trillion dollar spending plan and what’s in store for his successor.

Ahead of Friday’s vote, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said Republicans who vote in favor of the spending package are putting the Republican majority at risk. Roy will likely appear on CNN’s “State of the Union” to talk about conservative efforts to block passage of the bill.

This isn’t the only drama involving House Republicans. Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) announced Friday that he will resign from Congress before the end of his term, further shrinking the House’s already thin Republican majority.

Last week, Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), who had already announced his retirement, said he would leave Washington before his term ends. Buck’s last day was Friday. He is scheduled to appear on ABC’s “This Week,” where he will talk about the Republican Party and his decision to leave Congress ahead of the election.

Former President Trump faces a deadline Monday to secure bail or pay a huge sum in a New York civil fraud case. A judge found that he, his adult son and other Trump Organization officials conspired to lie about his net worth to gain favorable treatment from banks and insurance companies, leaving him with about $355 million. He was ordered to pay a fine and interest.

His total is now worth more than $454 million, with $112,000 in interest added daily. Earlier this week, Trump’s lawyers charged that it would be “impossible” to secure his bond. Critics have questioned whether the former president will secure funding from foreign sources if he is unable to secure bonds by Monday. New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) said that if Trump fails to meet the deadline, some of his assets could be seized.

Trump’s adult son, Eric Trump, is scheduled to appear on Fox’s “Fox News Sunday,” where he may talk about his father’s campaign and mounting legal costs.
