Sungjae Im had a record-setting day at Sentry.
He had 11 birdies on Sunday and shot an incredible 10-under 63. His 11 birdies brought his total for the week to 34, setting a new PGA Tour record for most birdies in a 72-hole stroke play event.
Jon Rahm previously shared the record with 32 birdies, along with Mark Calcavecchia and Paul Gow. Rahm accomplished the feat two years ago with The Sentry, and Calcavecchia and Gau accomplished it in 2001.
Im started the day six strokes behind Kirk, but quickly moved up the standings after starting with three consecutive birdies.
After dropping a shot on the par-4 fourth hole, Nin made pars on the fifth and sixth holes, and made a birdie on the downhill par-4 seventh hole.
He finished off the opening nine with another birdie and had six birdies on the back nine for a tournament total of 25 under par.
Im tied the record on the par-4 14th hole, then broke it on the par-5 15th hole.
please think about it. This week I shot 25 under par. This is a remarkable score for any event. But on Saturday, he closed with an even-par 73. This means Im played three rounds this week at 25 under. He suffered a double bogey on the par-4 17th hole in the third round, ending his hopes of competing.
Still, the 25-year-old from South Korea put on a strong showing on Sunday, making 11 birdies in the final round for second place behind Justin Rose. Rose had 12 birdies along the way and posted a 12-under 61, the lowest round of the week and tied the Kapalua course record.
Chris Kirk defeated Saheeth Segala by one stroke to win The Sentry at 29 under. Im, on the other hand, finished tied for fifth place with him and won just under $1 million.
