Sunny Hostin’s Son Stopped by Police for Trespassing
Sunny Hostin, co-host of “The View,” emphasized her background as a “former federal prosecutor” while dealing with authorities following an incident involving her son, Gabriel. New body camera footage captures Hostin asking police officers to pause for a moment during the engagement.
In a call to the officers, she stated, “My name is Sunny Hostin, I’m one of the co-hosts of ‘The View,’ and I’m a former federal prosecutor.” Upon her arrival, she continued to advocate for her son.
“That’s my son. He’s a Harvard graduate. He has no criminal record,” she explained, asserting, “He’s not the kind of kid to get into trouble. This was an innocent mistake.”
On June 16, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) police stopped Gabriel Hostin around 8 p.m. after observing him on Metro-North rail property at the New Rochelle station. Reports indicated he was trespassing in an area marked by a “No Trespassing” sign.
According to the MTA, officers noticed him near an electrified third rail before halting him at Commerce Drive. Following a background check revealing no criminal history, officers issued a summons for trespassing and subsequently released him.
Footage from the body camera shows Gabriel questioning the officer regarding the necessity of a citation. One officer explained, “Because it’s an arrestable crime, we want to make that clear,” but later acknowledged his lack of a criminal background, saying, “We know you’re not a criminal or anything, but our hands are tied with cameras everywhere.”
Hostin continued to press the officers to consider their discretion in the situation. “He’s a Harvard graduate who teaches fourth-grade geometry to kids in the South Bronx,” she said. “This was an innocent mistake.”
Documents obtained reveal that an officer observed Gabriel on active railroad land, citing the violation of a no trespassing sign. The citation specified they had seen him on the railroad right-of-way before determining that he did not have any active warrants against him.
Gabriel is expected to appear in municipal court in New Rochelle on July 31.
In a letter, Hostin claimed that her son was jogging when he accidentally entered the property, attracted by a gravel slope suitable for training. She noted that the entrance gate was open and the visible no trespassing sign was positioned in a way that was hard to see when entering.
Reactions online included criticism from various conservative commentators regarding Hostin’s mention of her legal credentials during the traffic stop. Some pointed to contradictions in her statements, comparing her public commentary on the law with her plea during the incident.
