Sunny Hostin states that being undocumented is not against the law on 'The View'

Discussion on Immigration and Deportation on “The View”

On Monday, Sunny Hostin, a co-host of “The View,” emphasized that being undocumented is not, technically speaking, a crime. She stated that it’s important to clarify this misconception.

“Sixty percent of Americans, including a significant number of independents and Republicans, as well as a smaller portion of Democrats believe undocumented status equates to crime,” Sarah Haynes remarked, in reference to the deportation efforts during the Trump administration. “It’s not merely about the methods but the underlying issue itself.”

The co-hosts were addressing President Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in response to demonstrations in Los Angeles over the weekend, criticizing his actions.

“There’s misinformation surrounding this topic,” Hostin pointed out. “Being undocumented isn’t a crime. People cannot be labeled as illegal.” She went on to note, “It is actually a civil issue.”

Alyssa Farah Griffin countered Hostin’s stance, reflecting on Haynes’ comments. She expressed that the situation was not simply a misunderstanding.

“A majority of Americans think it’s a civil crime, and I believe individuals without documentation should be deported,” she stated.

In response, Haynes challenged her co-host, indicating that the public support for deportation was stronger than often perceived.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized Trump’s actions in deploying the National Guard, labeling it as an exacerbation of tension in the area.

“I formally requested that the Trump administration retract the unauthorized military deployment in Los Angeles County and shift command back to me,” Newsom wrote in a letter to Trump. “There wasn’t an issue until Trump intervened. This is a grave breach of national sovereignty and detracts from essential resources elsewhere.”

Polling data has shown a notable inclination toward deportation among Americans. A recent Pew Research Center survey indicated that 32% of U.S. adults favor the deportation of all undocumented immigrants, while 16% believe they shouldn’t be deported at all.

Interestingly, nearly half of the respondents felt that some undocumented individuals should be deported, although they struggled to reach a consensus on the criteria for this action.
