Sunny Hostin States That Chuck Schumer's Time Is Done After 8 Democrats Support Shutdown Agreement

Sunny Hostin Calls for Chuck Schumer’s Removal

On Monday, Sunny Hostin, a co-host of “The View,” suggested that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer should be removed after a significant number of Democrats chose to support the reopening of the government.

During a procedural vote on Sunday, eight Democratic senators went against Schumer’s stance and voted for the Republican-led Continuing Resolution (CR), which is designed to keep the government funded through January 30 and put an end to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. Hostin expressed that Schumer must resign, arguing that he has failed to unify the party against President Donald Trump and the Republican agenda.

Hostin mentioned, “I think the era of Chuck Schumer is over. If he can’t unite the caucus, then he needs to take it home. He needs to be replaced.”

President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have claimed that Schumer’s support for the shutdown stemmed from fears of a primary challenge by Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In interviews, Ocasio-Cortez refrained from confirming whether she threatened Schumer’s position.

Hostin also criticized Democrats for letting down the American public by voting to reopen the government and agreeing to a future vote on extending Obamacare subsidies in December. The Democrats cited the expiration of these tax credits, set for December 31, as a reason for shutting down the government on October 1.

“Shame on Democrats for even believing that Republicans will vote yes,” Hostin stated. She expressed that the current arrangement does not guarantee any votes would happen at all. “The bottom line is that the Democratic Party got into this because of the blue wave from the American people. People say we want an opposition party. Working people want the Democratic Party to fight for them. And now they just caved in and surrendered,” she added.

The eight Democratic senators who supported the CR include Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire, who is set to retire in January 2027, and Virginia’s Tim Kaine, who announced his support for reopening the government shortly after the Democratic party’s victory in the Virginia gubernatorial election.

Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma claimed that Schumer had privately encouraged his party to maintain the shutdown until after Election Day, believing it would benefit the Democrats in the long run.
