Former Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York, who is seeking a return to Congress in Tuesday’s New York special election, said in an interview Monday that President Biden is “older,” but would likely support his re-election in 2024.
“The bottom line is he’s old. I mean, he’s 81 years old,” Suozzi said in an interview on “Good Day New York,” adding that Biden may be too old to run for president again. When asked if there was, he answered:
“We all know people. I know someone who is 81 years old and in good health, but I also know someone who is 81 years old and not well. He’s old, and for that matter. There’s no question about it,” Suozzi said.
Suozzi said it was “likely” he would support Biden’s re-election, but left open the possibility that another candidate would ultimately rise to the top.
“If he were to become the Democratic candidate, I would probably support him. We’ll have to see what happens,” Suozzi said.
“There’s all kinds of debate about whether he’ll make it or not,” Suozzi later added. “I don’t have any inside scoops or anything, but you know, we’ll see what happens between now and the Democratic convention.”
Suozzi is running against Republican candidate Maji Pilip to reclaim his old seat representing New York’s 3rd Congressional District.
He distanced himself from Biden and other established Democrats during his campaign to replace former Republican Rep. George Santos, who was ousted from the House late last year.
Still, he suggested Suozzi will criticize those who insult the sitting president and demand greater respect across party lines.
“He is the President of the United States. I don’t like people who insult the President of the United States. And when Trump was president, I would do the same. I don’t like people who insult the President of the United States. No,” Suozzi said.
“This is serious business. This is not a game. This means life and death, and people are being killed all over the world. I can’t keep my home, I can’t, I can’t keep my children. “There are people who are worried that they won’t be able to do as well as they do. This is serious business,” Suozzi continued. “And tweeting and attacking people saying, ‘You’re no good,’ ‘You’re no good,’ is destroying our country.”
