Super Bowl champ Jack Squirek, responsible for one of NFL’s ‘all-time great plays,’ dead at 64

Jack Squirek, a former NFL linebacker who won a Super Bowl with the Raiders and played one season with the Miami Dolphins, has died, Las Vegas announced Saturday. He was 64 years old.

Squirek played five seasons in the NFL and four seasons with the Raiders when the team was in Los Angeles. The Raiders remembered him as “the central figure in one of the greatest plays in professional football history.”

“Near halftime of Super Bowl XVIII, with the Raiders leading Washington, Squirek intercepted a screen pass and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown, defeating the Silver and Black at 21 in the eventual victory. “Given us an overwhelming lead of 3,” the team said. “He originally joined the Raiders as a second-round draft pick out of Illinois in 1982 and played in 53 career games for the Raiders before finishing his professional career in Miami.

“At this time, we extend our deepest condolences to everyone in Raider Nation.”

Hall of Fame candidate Patrick Willis says he would start over if he left the NFL during his prime.

He had one tackle in the Super Bowl, which the Raiders won 38-3.

Squirek appeared in 55 games in his NFL career, recording one interception and three sacks. He spent his final season with the Dolphins, appearing in two games before his departure.

His obituary was released Friday, remembering him as a beloved husband and devoted father.
