Ryan Clark, a one-time Super Bowl champion and current ESPN NFL analyst, criticized the New England Patriots for following the Rooney Rule when searching for a head coach.
The NFL's Rooney Rule, established by the NFL's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee in 2003, requires each team with a head coaching vacancy to interview at least two diverse candidates. is required. This rule was expanded in 2022 to include interviewing women as part of the “definition of minority candidates.”

The Patriots hired Mike Vrabel as their next coach about a week after firing Jerod Mayo. The team interviewed Pep Hamilton and Byron Leftwich to comply with the Rooney Rule, all completed before the end of the playoffs.
“I think this sheds some kind of light on the Rooney Rule, which the New England Patriots were making fun of,” Clark said Thursday. “Inside the NFL” “I'm interviewing Pep Hamilton and Byron Leftwich, two coaches who aren't even in football right now, just to meet my quota.
“The Rooney Rule was put in place to give some minority coaches an opportunity to get in front of some executives and owners who are really trying to give the job to the best person. Now, I want to be clear – I believe we are moving to a stage where organizations are hiring the people they think are the best for the job. Don't just interview a coach who has put in a lot of effort.

“I think it's a better solution for a team that wants to skip the Rooney Rule, like the New England Patriots would do, because they want Mike Vrabel and the lower-level team that reports to the head coach. By contacting the coverage offensive coordinator directly, you can receive guidance on building your resume and career.
“Let's stop giving bullish interviews to say the Rooney Rule did what it was supposed to do. When the Rooney Rule was first introduced, I believe it worked. Now it's insane. “It's become something of a joke for the NFL and the NFL,” NFL coaches and, more importantly, the people it was supposed to help. ”
