Jim Fahnhorst, Former NFL Linebacker, Passes Away at 66
Jim Fahnhorst, a former NFL linebacker who played a significant role in the San Francisco 49ers’ three Super Bowl victories, died on Wednesday at the age of 66. The team expressed its sorrow over his passing the following day.
During his time with the 49ers, Fahnhorst tallied 232 tackles and seven interceptions over 82 games throughout seven seasons, starting in 39 of those contests.
Interestingly, Jim wasn’t the only athlete in his family; he played alongside his brother Keith, who was an offensive lineman for the 49ers from 1974 to 1987. They both made a notable impact during their college careers, playing for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Jim earned a spot on the first team’s All-Big Ten team in 1981.
Keith, who passed away in 2018, was also 66 at the time. Their shared journey in football was certainly a memorable one.
Fahnhorst was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 1982 NFL Draft, although he never played in a game for the team. Instead, he spent two years in the USFL before joining the 49ers to be reunited with his brother.
Reflecting on his transition to the 49ers in 2018, Jim mentioned that the decision to join the team felt straightforward, highlighting the continuity in his football life.
