Super Bowl LX: Darnold vs. Maye
The upcoming Super Bowl LX will feature two quarterbacks with very different journeys: Sam Darnold from the Seattle Seahawks and Drake Maye of the New England Patriots. Both have reached this pivotal moment in their careers through distinct paths in the NFL.
Ultimately, one team will claim the championship, while the other will be left pondering their missed opportunities. So, who has the upper hand at quarterback?
Ryan Fitzpatrick, a former NFL quarterback and now a commentator on Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football,” has been following both players throughout the season and playoffs. He has insights into which quarterback might excel in this high-stakes game.
“Sam’s doing really well right now. I would definitely give Sam and the Seahawks the edge,” Fitzpatrick shared while summarizing his recent vacation in Aruba.
Interestingly, Darnold has only participated in two playoff games since the Seahawks secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC. Kenneth Walker III was a standout in their last game against the San Francisco 49ers, scoring three touchdowns and rushing for over 100 yards. Meanwhile, Darnold completed 70% of his passes for 124 yards and a touchdown, achieving a quarterback rating of 110.9.
His standout performance came during the NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams, where he matched Matthew Stafford’s three touchdown passes and outperformed him in passing yards, throwing for 346 yards. This strong outing helped propel the Seahawks to the Super Bowl.
On the other hand, Maye’s journey has not been as straightforward. While he has shown flashes of brilliance, he has faced challenges in his early playoff appearances.
Fitzpatrick noted that this moment might just be the perfect opportunity for Maye. Despite his struggles earlier, the rookie was a candidate for MVP due to his impressive performance in the regular season.
“For Drake Maye, he struggled a little bit in the playoffs, but I think this bye week will be beneficial,” Fitzpatrick explained. “He was consistent and efficient during the regular season, and although he had some fumbles, he just wasn’t as sharp in the postseason.”
“Having a week off might help him take a breath and reset. He just needs to play his best game on Sunday,” he added.
As the Super Bowl approaches, fans are left wondering: Can Darnold maintain his momentum in California? Will Maye find his rhythm again? Fitzpatrick hopes both will perform at their best.
“I’d love to see fireworks on the field. Weather permitting, I hope it’s an exciting matchup and not a dull game,” he remarked.
Shifting gears, Fitzpatrick and his wife recently enjoyed a relaxing trip to Aruba to recharge after a long football season. He has partnered with the Aruba Tourism Board to spotlight the island’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices, which prioritize environmental protection and local culture.
“We rarely get to travel since we have seven kids, so it’s nice to find the right place. Aruba was perfect for us. We enjoyed the beautiful beaches and resorts, but I also appreciate adventure. I’m not one for just lounging on the beach,” he said, reflecting on his trip.
“We felt immediately relaxed, and that feeling lingered when we returned home.”
