Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement from NFL
Super Bowl champion Tyrann Mathieu declared his retirement from the NFL in a social media announcement on Tuesday.
At 33, Mathieu wrapped up his 12-year career with the New Orleans Saints, concluding three seasons with the team. He was famously dubbed the “honey badger” during his time on the field.
In his post, Mathieu expressed, “I’m full of gratitude when I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that shaped me in every way.”
Reflecting on his journey, he added, “From my first snap in college to my last play in the NFL, this journey was nothing but a blessing. Football gave me the purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay forever, but it gave me more community than anything else.”
Mathieu initially made his mark as a high-energy player at LSU, where he finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting as a standout defensive back during his sophomore year. In 2011, he had impressive stats with 76 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two interceptions, and more.
However, he faced challenges when, in 2012, he was removed from the team due to repeated drug tests related to marijuana use and later arrested for possession.
Despite talent that many recognized, he was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, partly due to his off-field issues. Yet, he quickly shined, earning All-Pro honors twice during his five years with the team.
Mathieu didn’t forget the support he received along the way. He remarked, “To all the coaches who believed in me, to all the teammates who fought by my side, and to all the fans who cheered with me through highs and lows, your love carried me further than I could have imagined.”
He played a season with the Houston Texans before becoming a key player for the Kansas City Chiefs, where he helped lead the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2019.
Over his NFL career, Mathieu participated in 180 games, posting figures like 838 tackles, 11 sacks, 36 interceptions, and more. Four of those interceptions ended in touchdowns. He ended his farewell with a heartfelt note, saying, “I hope you’re proud of it there. This isn’t goodbye. It’s just the next chapter.”
