Super Bowl-winning coach shares thoughts on memorial event for Charlie Kirk

Remembering Charlie Kirk

Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungey recently reflected on the memorial service for Charlie Kirk, which took place on Tuesday. This gathering was held in honor of the 31-year-old conservative figure who tragically lost his life at an event at Utah Valley University earlier this month. The service drew thousands of attendees to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, over the weekend.

Among the speakers was Charlie’s wife, Erica Kirk, who delivered heartfelt remarks. Notable figures like President Donald Trump and Elon Musk also shared their thoughts during the ceremony. Dungey commented, “People were getting better, and I think I was very grateful for that.” He emphasized the importance of setting politics aside to respect Kirk’s memory, stating: “We’ll talk about what Christ says and what he wants to see.”

While Dungey chose not to attend the service himself, it was noted that at least one sports figure, Chicago Cubs rookie Matt Shaw, was present. Shaw had taken pictures with Kirk just a few weeks before his untimely death.

Shaw explained his decision to leave the Cubs temporarily to attend the memorial, saying, “My connection with Charlie was through us. [Christian] Faith. And that drives me every day.” He expressed his gratitude for the support he receives from his faith, which he believes helps him contribute to his team’s potential success.

Reflecting on the circumstances, Shaw mentioned, “It’s something I feel really, really blessed about. Anything that comes backlash is fine; I feel strongly about my faith.” It’s a reminder that, amidst sorrow, people find strength in connections, both personal and faith-based, in moments of remembrance.
