Social media users have suggested Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker as a groomsman for Travis Kelce’s upcoming wedding to Taylor Swift, following their recent engagement announcement.
Butker faced some backlash last year after he encouraged female alumni to embrace the role of “housewife.” His faith-based speech sparked critique from the LGBTQ community and then-President Joe Biden due to his views on abortion, which he connected to what he sees as broader cultural issues. He stated, “Abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, and increased support for degenerated cultural values have grown, largely due to the prevalence of disability.”
Yet, as the NFL season ramped up, the controversy seemed to fade. Butker played a critical role in leading the Chiefs to the AFC Championship, successfully kicking the field goal that secured their spot in Super Bowl LIX.
Many who chimed in on social media felt Butker would be an ideal groomsman for Kelce. In fact, Butker expressed that he genuinely wants the best for both Swift and Kelce.
Meanwhile, NFL star Bijan Robinson praised the engagement, noting its significance in the sports world.
Butker joked about his encounter with Swift saying, “I’m not saying I’m a ‘Swiftie,’ but I met her after our New Year’s game.” He recounted how they celebrated clinching the AFC West title, which made the moment even more special. He added, “I rarely go out, but it was New Year’s, so we had some champagne.”
He wasn’t sure how familiar Swift is with football, and she seemed surprised by his kicking skills. Butker admitted to feeling a bit nervous about meeting the pop star and expressed his hopes that they could eventually start a family together.
Swift and Kelce have been together for roughly two years before announcing their engagement.
