Supporters of Jack Ciattarelli capitalize on Mikie Sherrill's careful campaign approach

New Jersey Assemblywoman Mikie Sherrill’s calculated campaign appearances have provided fodder for her Republican rivals, particularly in the context of her ongoing race against Jack Ciattarelli.

Ciattarelli believes that Sherrill’s meticulous strategy has given her an advantage, while he struggles with a significant deficit in the polls.

“Honestly, she’s a gaffe machine,” remarked Chris Russell, a GOP strategist working on Ciattarelli’s campaign.

He drew comparisons between Sherrill and Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting both struggle with direct answers and often find themselves in awkward situations. “They seem to avoid the press and public, operating in a highly controlled manner,” he added.

Ciattarelli is making efforts to emphasize Sherrill’s perceived disconnect from voters.

His supporters argue that she engages less directly with the public than he does. According to Govtrack, her engagement appears lacking.

“I do this for a living, and it’s clear when a candidate limits interactions to just supporters,” said GOP consultant Alex Wiles.

“It feels like her appearances are very curated, like there’s strict control in who gets to meet her… everything seems safe and organized,” he explained.

Even observers outside the campaign have noted a sense of vulnerability in Sherrill’s approach, perhaps reflecting a deeper issue. Polling data shows she may be underperforming.

“Mikie Sherrill is very much employing what we call a Rose Garden strategy,” said Dan Cassino, a political science professor. “She’s remaining largely insulated, with minimal public exposure.” Yet, he acknowledged that similar strategies have previously succeeded for other candidates.

Sherrill’s campaign dismisses criticisms from Ciattarelli’s camp, arguing they are out of touch. “We’re connecting with New Jerseyans in ways that he simply cannot,” said campaign spokesperson Sam Chan.

Sherrill currently enjoys an 8.8-point lead over Ciattarelli, as recent polling indicates.

However, within Ciattarelli’s campaign, there’s an internal poll hinting at a more favorable view of his support.

His team recently highlighted a moment when Sherrill struggled to articulate her goals during an interview. “That’s a good question… so many names come to mind,” she took about 18 seconds before settling on a vague federal program. This moment drew comparisons to past missteps by Harris.

Sherrill first entered politics during the Blue Wave of 2018, stepping into the role after defeating GOP incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen.

Overall, she has since shifted focus to local issues.

Some, including New Jersey GOP strategist Janet Hoffman, argue she lacks a grasp on vital state matters. “It’s easier being one of 435 in Congress than managing a complex state like New Jersey,” she noted.

Having previously run for governor in 2021, Ciattarelli appears more cautious regarding his ties to former President Trump and the larger MAGA agenda, especially as he calls for an end to sanctuary state laws, despite the state’s diverse population composition.

However, he is equally focused on economic issues, recently challenging Sherrill on her plans to manage rising energy costs in the state. New Jersey’s Utility Commission has warned that electricity rates could rise significantly this year.

Ciattarelli’s campaign produced an ad that featured an interview clip of Sherrill where she downplayed the energy issue, suggesting her stance could lead to drastic sacrifices. In another interview, Sherrill claimed renewable energy was more affordable, although her context was omitted in the campaign advertisement, which her team has labeled “misleading.”
