A coalition of allies from former mayor Michael Bloomberg is showing support for Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race.
Cuomo’s campaign shared on Friday that it has achieved a record fundraising total of $3.9 million. Notably, Emma Bloomberg, the daughter of the former mayor, is involved as well.
Kevin Sheekey, who played a significant role in Bloomberg’s 2020 presidential campaign and now heads his media company, has also made contributions to Cuomo’s efforts, sources indicate.
Additionally, Thomas Secunda, co-founder of Bloomberg LP, donated $40,000 to the pro-Cuomo Super PAC, Fix The City, according to reports.
“This donation signifies Bloomberg’s influence and support,” a source mentioned.
Cuomo’s campaign has raised approximately $8.28 million since launching on February 28, aided by expected public matching funds.
The influx of donations reflects a growing inevitability surrounding Cuomo’s mayoral bid, amid concerns about national legislator Zoran Mamdani, who has been critical of Israeli policies and is often perceived as controversial among Jewish activists.
In contrast, Bloomberg is a prominent supporter of Israel, having recently contributed $44 million to Israeli health services. He even named a center in Jerusalem after his mother.
A recent poll shows Cuomo leading by a notable 37% in the Democratic primary, with Mamdani trailing by 18%.
However, Mamdani does have support among younger voters, taking 38% in that demographic compared to Cuomo’s 18%, as indicated by the Marist University Institute of Public Opinion survey.
This financial backing for Cuomo poses a significant challenge for Mayor Eric Adams, who operates independently and faces political uncertainty.
Bloomberg has generally stayed away from New York politics lately, aside from a personal meeting with Adams. Yet, his allies’ financial network is extensive, suggesting more contributions could continue to flow to Cuomo.
