Israeli MP Issues Warning on Syrian Airstrikes
In a rare acknowledgment of the consequences tied to Israeli military actions, South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson has declared Syria’s recent airstrikes to be tantamount to “suicide” for Tel Aviv. This statement comes as he reflects on his longstanding support for Israel during an emotional conversation.
Wilson criticized the Syrian military strikes, claiming they represent a mockery directed at President Trump, especially after he had conferred with Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharraa. Following that meeting, sanctions were lifted, supposedly paving the way for a surge in economic prospects for Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
He reported having received an anxious call from Ambassador Yethiel Reiter, who urged Wilson to warn back home that Israel should cease its strikes.
Wilson noted that just weeks earlier, there had been back-channel discussions hinting at potential normalization between Israel and Syria. Now, these talks seem to have been derailed. He expressed concern that the airstrikes will complicate U.S.-brokered initiatives aimed at improving Israeli-Saudi relations, lamenting the loss as “sad” and “damaging.”
Furthermore, Wilson warned that Syria’s internal turmoil could create wider instability in the region, jeopardizing newly formed ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia. He argued this would also strain NATO relations with Turkey and threaten the Kurdish communities across Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and Iran. His fears extend to the potential resurgence of ISIS, which he believes could emerge as a significant threat to Israel amidst such fragmentation.
On a larger scale, Wilson remarked that the airstrikes inadvertently bolster Russia’s influence in both Iran and Syria. He contended that Moscow may navigate Syrian bases to enhance its naval presence throughout Africa and in the Mediterranean.
He expressed a grim view of the situation, asserting that issues within Iran lead to instabilities that, paradoxically, benefit war criminals in the region.
This week, Israeli National Security Minister Ben Gwil stated that Israel must move decisively against al-Sharaa. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz echoed this sentiment, noting that the assault aimed to safeguard the Druze minority communities within Syria from imminent threats posed by Syrian leadership.
As a caveat, Katz shared his sentiments about the Syrian leadership, stating a lack of trust in both the current and former leadership. He described al-Sharaa as someone who utilizes jihadist factions against Syrian minorities.
Wilson disagreed with the narrative that frames the Syrian regime as a primary adversary. In his view, the real danger lies with Tehran, arguing, “The head of the snake is Tehran.” He expressed sadness at the way the conflict is perceived, indicating some levels of misunderstanding about the motivations behind the actions being taken.
Despite accusations from Syrian leaders that Israel is sowing discord by championing the Druze, there are signs of increasing pressure from Washington for de-escalation.
The Trump administration has officially urged Israel to halt its strikes and instead consider engaging in direct discussions with Damascus. U.S. envoy Tom Barrack has reportedly reached out multiple times to offer counsel to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s advisor, expressing that this is a “troublesome and terrifying situation.”
As it stands, the Israeli Ministry of Defense has not offered comments on the unfolding events.
