The U.S. Supreme Court decided Monday to reconsider Tennessee’s ban on puberty-blocking drugs and sex-reassignment surgery for minors.
The case, U.S. v. Scurmetti, is scheduled to be heard during the session that begins in October.
This is the first time the Supreme Court has considered restricting puberty-suppressing drugs, hormone therapy and surgery for minors.
Tennessee is one of 22 states that have measures in place banning such medical interventions on minors.

A federal appeals court has allowed the Tennessee and Kentucky laws to go into effect pending the outcome of ongoing litigation.
Among those who filed an amicus brief opposing the state law was actor Elliot Page, one of 57 transgender people supporting the Biden administration’s lawsuit.
In its Supreme Court filing, the administration also said 25 states have laws that restrict or ban “gender-affirming medical care” for transgender young people. South Carolina passed such a law last week.
This is breaking news, check back for updates.
