Surging Mets belt four homers in key win over elite rival Phillies

Despite the change of opponent, the Mets continued their winning streak on Thursday.

After struggling against the hapless Nationals for the second straight day, manager Carlos Mendoza's team was ready for a bigger challenge against the NL East leaders, even with Phillies weak link Taijuan Walker on the mound.

Walker pitched three scoreless innings in relief to help the Phillies beat the Mets last Saturday, but took extra batting practice that night.

The Mets hit four home runs off the right-hander and won 10-6 in front of 35,982 fans at Citi Field.

The Mets scored 10 runs in each of the final two games in a sweep of the Nationals to win their fourth straight game and their 16th in their last 20 games.

They remained in contention with Arizona for the second wild card spot in the National League and two games behind Atlanta for third place.

Mark Vientos, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Alvarez all homered, but Francisco Lindor missed his fourth straight game with a sore back.

Luis Severino didn't pitch at his best, but he kept the Mets competitive by allowing five hits, two walks, seven strikeouts and three earned runs over six innings.

This was Severino's second consecutive start against the Phillies, and he gave up three runs in six innings both times.

Vientos and Alonso hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.

This marks the sixth time this season that the Mets have hit a home run in consecutive games.

Vientos' explosive goal was his 25th of the season, while Alonso's 34th extended his team-leading tally.

After Trea Turner homered to tie the game at 2-2 in the second inning (Kyle Schwarber had reached base with two outs), the Mets came storming back in the bottom of the inning, when leadoff hitter Jose Iglesias singled over the fence in right-center field.

Severino struggled through the fourth inning, allowing two hits and a walk to put the Phillies within 4-3. Brandon Marsh singled for one run with two outs after walking JT Realmuto.

Alvarez's three-run rocket in the fourth inning was the highlight of an inning in which the Mets sent 10 batters to home plate and scored five runs.

The comeback began when J.D. Martinez was hit and Tyrone Taylor walked before Alvarez caught a high sinker for his second home run in three games and fourth since Sept. 11.

But the Mets continued to score in the inning, as Iglesias singled and Nimmo hit an RBI double to give the Phillies an 8-3 lead.

Vientos' ensuing RBI single handed the baton over, and then Alonso and Jesse Winker walked to load the bases, but the fun ended when Martinez drove in an inning-ending double play.

Danny Young gave up three runs in the seventh inning to cut the Mets' lead to 9-6.

Bryce Harper's two-out double against Reid Garrett scored two runs and was the big hit of the inning.

Luis Ángel Acuña hit an RBI triple in the seventh inning to extend the Mets' lead to 10–6.

It was just the latest contribution from the rookie, who has homered in each of his previous two games.
