Fines Issued Following Pocket Knife Incident in Kansas-Texas Tech Game

The Kansas Jayhawks are facing fines following the pocket knife controversy that arose from their recent game against Texas Tech.

In video submissions from Texas Tech, a Jayhawks player can be seen picking up a pocket knife from the sidelines and handing it over to a staff member. This seems to contradict Kansas head coach Lance Leipold’s assertion that a fan threw the knife during the third quarter, something that led to Kansas receiving a $25,000 fine from the Big 12 Conference.

Texas Tech’s athletics director, Kirby Hocutt, mentioned in a letter that there was no noticeable reaction from the Kansas sideline, which would be expected if a pocket knife had truly been thrown.

As noted in a statement from the Big 12, the Jayhawks were fined for making “derogatory comments regarding the conference and member institutions,” as well as for inaccurate statements made by Coach Leipold about the pocket knife incident.

In an interesting twist, Texas Tech University was also hit with a $25,000 fine due to “repeatedly throwing objects onto the playing surface,” including tortillas—an action that’s become a long-standing tradition dating back to the 1990s.

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark expressed disappointment in Leipold’s comments, emphasizing that they undermine the integrity of the conference. He stated that both teams displayed behavior that warranted financial penalties, reinforcing the conference’s commitment to maintaining integrity.

Following Texas Tech’s 42-17 victory, Leipold called the situation “ridiculous” and remarked on the need to address the cultural context surrounding it. He also warned that such incidents could ultimately lead to serious injuries.

While acknowledging his emotional reaction in the aftermath, Leipold admitted he should have handled the situation more privately. Meanwhile, Jayhawks athletics director Travis Goff concurred that it would have been preferable to keep commentary internal.

As a result of the win, Texas Tech now boasts a 6-0 record and is positioned seventh in the AP Top 25, while Kansas State, having dropped to 4-3 with their recent loss, prepares to host the next game against Kansas State.
