Major Shift in Political Affiliation among Americans

A recent poll indicates significant changes in how Americans view political parties, particularly in President Donald Trump’s second term. According to findings from a Gallup survey released on Monday, it’s projected that 45% of U.S. adults will identify as politically independent by 2025. This marks a record high, surpassing the previous peak of 43% recorded in 2014, 2023, and 2024.

The poll reveals that the proportion of adults identifying as either Democrat or Republican stands at 27% for each party. This growing trend towards political independence appears to reflect a generational shift, as younger individuals today are more likely to identify as independent compared to previous generations.

Interestingly, since 1991, Gallup has regularly gauged how independents lean politically. By 2025, more independents are expected to lean Democratic rather than Republican.

Of the 45% identifying as political independents, the survey found that 20% lean towards the Democratic Party, while 15% favor the Republican Party. Meanwhile, 10% of independents express no leaning either way. Compared to 2024, there’s been a three-point decrease in Republican leaners, contrasted with a three-point increase among those leaning Democratic.

An analysis of specific party affiliations shows that approximately 47% of Americans identify as Democrats or lean towards the Democratic Party, compared to 42% who identify as Republicans or lean Republican. This change effectively concludes a three-year period of Republican dominance in party affiliation, echoing trends from President Trump’s first term, where Democrats typically held a five-point advantage.

Gallup’s insights were drawn from over 13,000 interviews conducted with U.S. adults throughout the year.
