Survey Reveals Divided Opinions on American Pride
As we approach the nation’s 250th anniversary, a new survey highlights notably different perspectives on American pride. Only 8% of respondents believe the U.S. is the “greatest” country, especially among Democrats, who seem to express less pride than their Republican counterparts.
According to the latest findings, while a majority still considers the U.S. to be at least better than average, the specifics are telling. About 25% view America as the “greatest,” and 20% deem it “one of the greatest countries.” Conversely, 12% feel it’s “better than average,” while only 12% believe the U.S. is “worse than average,” with a smaller portion—9%—ranking it “among the worst.” A mere 4% stated it was the absolute worst.
Political affiliation plays a significant role in these opinions. A striking 52% of Republicans classify the U.S. as the greatest country, followed by 28% who say it is “one of the greatest.”
On the other hand, Democrats show a starkly different sentiment. A mere 8% consider America to be the “greatest,” and only 16% think it’s “one of the greatest.” Interestingly, a substantial portion—23% of Democrats—believes the U.S. ranks “worse than average.” Furthermore, 15% feel it is “among the worst,” with 4% stating it’s the absolute worst.
Surveys indicate that 13% of Democrats view America as “about average,” while another 13% feel it’s “better than average.” Among self-identified liberals, the sentiment is even more critical, with 26% saying the U.S. is “worse than average.” Conversely, a majority of conservatives—53%—declare it the “greatest.”
Adding to the complexity, nearly a quarter of those who supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election reported viewing the U.S. as “worse than average.” In stark contrast, 54% of Trump supporters classified it as the “greatest,” with 27% saying it’s “one of the greatest.” Notably, none of the Trump supporters described America as the worst, while 5% of Harris supporters did.
This survey, which included 1,679 participants from June 19 to June 22, 2026, comes ahead of the significant milestone of the U.S.’s 250th anniversary. Additionally, it mirrors earlier research showing that nearly four in ten Democrats express feelings of embarrassment about being American.
