Survey: Most People Think Democrats Favor Open Borders

Poll Reveals Views on Democratic Support for Open Borders

A recent poll conducted by Harvard-Harris University shows that a significant number of Americans think Democrats favor open borders. The investigation posed the question, “Do you think the Democratic Party now supports open borders or is opposed to open borders?”

According to the findings, 56% of respondents believe Democrats are “in favor” of open borders, while 44% think they oppose it. Interestingly, Democrats appear somewhat divided, with 52% opposing open borders and 48% in support. In contrast, a larger percentage of Republicans and independents, 67% and 53% respectively, view Democrats as supporters of open borders.

The survey also indicates that 45% of respondents believe Democrats would not deport illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes, with 66% of Republicans and 47% of independents concurring.

Conducted from May 29-31, 2026, the survey included 1,725 registered voters, and the margin of error stands at +/- 2.4%.

This survey emerges amid ongoing concerns about the Democratic Party’s reputation regarding border policies. Criticism has been directed at the Biden administration for actions perceived as promoting open borders, such as limiting border enforcement and establishing “sanctuary cities.” Consequently, an estimated 19 million illegal immigrants are thought to reside in the United States, according to the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

As reported, “Since December 2020 estimates, the U.S. illegal alien population has increased by 4.1 million people, or 28.2%, reflecting an unprecedented wave of illegal immigration under the Biden administration.”

Immigration remains a pivotal issue for President Trump in the 2024 election, with executive actions initiated to safeguard Americans from what he terms an “invasion.” One such action emphasizes the enforcement of immigration laws against undocumented individuals who may pose a threat.

In part, it states that “It is the policy of the United States to faithfully enforce immigration laws against all undocumented aliens, especially those who threaten the safety of American citizens.”

House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) has criticized Democrats, highlighting that voters opposed the Safe America Act, which would have eased restrictions at the borders. He remarked, “Today, Democrats proved once again with their voices and votes that they want open borders and are ready to vote to defund the police.”

In his House speech, Scalise discussed the dangers posed by illegal immigrants. He expressed concern about the number of victims harmed in conflicts involving Border Patrol agents. “This is shameful,” he noted, emphasizing that Americans deserve safe communities and streets.
