Survivor of Soviet communism enters contest to succeed deceased House Democrat

New Candidate Emerges in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District

Karina Lipsman, a Republican and daughter of Soviet refugees, has announced her candidacy to replace the late Jerry Connolly, a Democratic representative from Virginia. Lipsman shared her family’s journey, highlighting their escape from the Soviet Union to pursue the American dream. She recalled her upbringing in Baltimore as a single mother navigating financial challenges.

“We escaped socialism to seek freedom and opportunities that America offers,” Lipsman expressed. She emphasized that her journey to citizenship at age 18 was fueled by hard work and determination.

Lipsman, currently working with the victims of the Communist Memorial Foundation, voiced her concerns about the expanding government and shrinking middle class, drawing parallels to her family’s experiences. “We’re heading into a troubling situation, much like what my family faced,” she noted, commending Donald Trump for challenging the political norms. However, she believes he needs more allies in this fight.

As she joins the race in Virginia’s 11th District, Lipsman recognizes the challenges ahead. The special election, announced by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, is set for September 9th. Connolly, who served since 2009, passed away from esophageal cancer, and prior to him, the seat was held by Republican Tom Davis.

Lipsman’s previous attempt at running in the 8th Congressional District ended in defeat, but she feels there’s a demand for leaders willing to work hard. “There’s a need for someone who will roll up their sleeves and tackle the issues,” she stated.

The race already features a number of Democratic candidates, including Fairfax County superintendent James Walkinshaw and others, such as former Minority Business Development Counselor Leopold Nuttete, Navy veteran Joshua Eisen, and local official Candice Bennett. Lipsman will also be joined by fellow Republicans, including Mike Van Meter, who faced Connolly in the last election.
