Susan Kendall Newman, Daughter of Paul Newman, Passes Away at 72
Susan Kendall Newman, known for her role in the Beatles tribute film “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” has passed away at the age of 72. Her family reported that she died on August 2 due to complications from a chronic health condition.
The late actress was the daughter of Paul Newman and his first wife, Jackie Witt. She had a career starting with productions on and off Broadway, including the short-lived 1975 show “We Interrupted This Program.” In 1978, she starred in Robert Zemeckis’ film “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” playing one of the teenagers attempting to sneak into the Beatles’ first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.
This comedy film marked Zemeckis’ directorial debut and was produced by Steven Spielberg, featuring a cast that included Nancy Allen and Bobby Di Cicco.
Susan also acted in the 1977 sports comedy “Slap Shot,” where her father played a minor league hockey coach, and appeared in Robert Altman’s 1978 film “The Wedding,” which had significant stars like Carol Burnett and Geraldine Chaplin.
In 1980, she took on a production role for the ABC theatrical adaptation of Michael Christopher’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Shadow Box,” directed by her father and featuring her stepmother, Joanne Woodward. Susan received an Emmy nomination for her work on this project and was also nominated for a Grammy for her children’s audiobook series.
Beyond her film and television projects, Susan was heavily involved in philanthropy and social activism. She contributed to her father’s Scott Newman Foundation, which was established to combat drug abuse following her brother Scott’s overdose in 1978.
Susan frequently lectured on substance abuse prevention at various platforms, including the Betty Ford Center and numerous educational institutions across the United States and beyond. She was instrumental in creating an educational video titled “Drug-Free Kids: A Parent’s Guide.”
Susan was born to Paul Newman and Jackie Witt, who were married from 1949 until their divorce in 1958. The couple had two other children, Scott and Stephanie. Paul later married Joanne Woodward, with whom he had three daughters and remained married until his death in 2008.
