Montreal Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Gunman Neutralized
A gunman was “neutralized” on Monday following a shooting in Montreal that resulted in the deaths of a police officer and a civilian.
The incident unfolded in the Cote-des-Neiges neighborhood, as confirmed by local officials.
Montreal Police Chief Fadi Dagher held a news conference stating that officers had responded to reports of gunfire at the Hilton Garden Inn.
Tragically, a male police officer and one civilian lost their lives. A female officer sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital in critical condition, though she is reported to be stable now.
“It’s a tragedy. It’s a nightmare,” Dagher expressed.
The firearm used in the incident has been recovered, according to the police chief.
Authorities issued a warning around 12:30 p.m., advising residents in the Côte-des-Neiges area to stay indoors due to an “armed and dangerous suspect” nearby.
“If you are in an affected area, please seek shelter indoors, lock your doors, stay away from windows, and follow instructions from local authorities,” the notice stated.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martínez Ferrada addressed the situation online, extending her condolences to the families of the fallen officers. She said, “My thoughts are also with all those affected by this tragedy. We are closely monitoring the development of the situation and ask the public to respect the instructions of the SPVM.”
Quebec Premier Christine Frechette voiced her deep concern over the shooting on social media, stating that the province would cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.
“This kind of behavior will not be tolerated here. We are monitoring the situation closely,” Frechette remarked.
Details regarding the shooter and the events leading up to the shooting have yet to be disclosed.
It’s noteworthy that this marks the first line-of-duty death for the Montreal police in 24 years, as noted by Dagher.
Brandon Elkaim, a local resident, expressed his shock at the violence in what is usually a calm area.
“What we know now is that there were about 10 or 12 shots fired,” he stated. Following this, there was a brief lull in activity, during which the park was deserted, with parents and children seen fleeing in panic.
As of Monday afternoon, officials reassured the public that there was no immediate threat.
