Milwaukee police responded to a call of shots fired and a 20-year-old man fled the scene on foot and fired shots at officers before being critically injured overnight, police said Monday.

Officers arrived at the scene late Sunday after police received a 911 call reporting shots fired in the area, according to Milwaukee Police Department Deputy Chief Craig Thurnow. They say they found an armed suspect.

Sarnow said at a news conference early Monday morning that the 20-year-old ran for about two blocks before firing at officers who returned fire at about 11:15 p.m., hitting the suspect several times.
Emergency services took the young man to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.
No one else was injured, and police said a gun was recovered at the scene.

Three police officers have been placed on administrative duties, a customary measure in response to police shootings. Milwaukee police said the Wauwatosa Police Department will lead the investigation into the shooting.
