Suspect ID’d in fatal shooting of college gymnast Kara Welsh

The suspect in the shooting death of Kara Welsh, a 21-year-old gymnast at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has been identified as Chad T. Richards, police said.

According to the Whitewater Police Department, Richards, 23, of Loves Park, Illinois, was arrested Friday night after he allegedly shot the award-winning gymnast multiple times at an apartment about a block away from the university's main campus.

Whitewater police have asked the district attorney's office to file charges of first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while armed, police said.
