The suspect responsible for the tragic shooting of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University is now in custody, according to FBI director Kash Patel. The event occurred on Wednesday, and law enforcement has confirmed that the gunman targeted the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA.
Patel noted that the suspect had been elusive until recently but was apprehended following a manhunt.
Initial reports incorrectly identified an elderly white man as the shooter; however, this was later dismissed by police.
In video footage shared online, a man dressed in white shorts and a blue sweatshirt is seen kneeling, stating, “I have the right to stay silent.”
Kirk was engaging with a crowd, discussing mass shootings that involved transgender individuals, when he was struck by gunfire from about 200 yards away. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with spectators panicking and fleeing after hearing a shot. Some individuals were visibly affected, appearing to twitch in pain as they reacted to the sound.
Emergency services rushed Kirk to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery after sustaining severe injuries, as reported by Laci Williams, a former aide at Turning Point USA.

Former Utah Representative Jason Chaffetz, who was present at the event with his family, recalled that the shooting occurred during Kirk’s response to a question about a transgender shooter. He described the moment as one filled with chaos, stating, “Everyone was screaming, everyone was running.” Chaffetz pointed out that while Kirk had some security, there were no security checks, and the police presence was minimal.
Chaffetz expressed a belief that the shooting was deliberate, adding a sense of foreboding regarding the topic Kirk was discussing at the time.
Kirk, a notable figure aligned with President Trump and popular on platforms like YouTube and X, had amassed a considerable following for his bold conservative stance and frequent campus debates.
Following the shocking event, Trump expressed his condolences, stating, “The great and legendary Charlie Kirk is dead.” He also reflected on Kirk’s relationships and his contributions to young people in America, expressing sorrow for his family, including Kirk’s wife, Erica, and their two young children.
