Suspect in custody after NYC stabbing spree leaves 2 men dead, woman critical

A knife-wielding suspect with multiple prior arrests killed two men and left a woman fighting for her life Monday after an unprovoked attack in New York City, authorities said. did.

The alleged attacker, whose name has not been released, is a 51-year-old homeless man who has been arrested eight times. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenney said a good Samaritan taxi driver was arrested after he alerted authorities.

“Today, we have three innocent New Yorkers who were victims of horrific, horrific assaults and are just living normal lives,” he said.

Kenney said the stabbing began around 8:20 a.m., when a 36-year-old man working on 19th Street was stabbed in the abdomen while standing in front of a construction site.

The suspect fled and the victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

About two hours later, a 68-year-old man fishing on 30th Street near FDR Drive along the East River was stabbed multiple times in the body, Kenney said. The victim also died at the same hospital.

Thirty minutes later, a 36-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times at East 42nd Street and First Avenue near the United Nations Building.

“At this time, it appears these attacks were unfounded,” Kenney said. “He just walked up to them and started attacking them with a knife.”

Shortly after the third attack, witnesses near 46th Street told police that the robbery suspect was walking in the area. Authorities said the witness was a taxi driver who witnessed the third attack and believed it was a robbery rather than a stabbing.

The suspect was taken into police custody. Police said the man was found holding a large kitchen knife covered in blood. His clothes were also covered in blood, police said.

The police officer who took the suspect into custody told reporters: “I just heard the commotion. I went outside and heard what people were saying and their reactions.”
