Suspect in dad’s camping murder ‘cut off’ from self-defense claim in court

The suspect in the murder of a Montana father and avid outdoorsman pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday, claiming self-defense in his confession to police, but the Gallatin County Attorney's Office and the suspect's defense The group confirmed this to Fox News Digital.

Abby, 41, was charged with intentional homicide and tampering with evidence, records show. The Gallatin County Attorney's Office confirmed it will not pursue the death penalty.

According to the indictment, the suspect told police he killed Jersem in “self-defense” on October 10 after Jersem offered him a beer.

However, the document adds that Abby's lack of defensive injuries is inconsistent with self-defense.

Jersem arrived in the Moose Creek area near Big Sky on Thursday, October 10, and set up camp. His girlfriend told police she was supposed to pick him up after work on Friday evening, Oct. 11, but when he didn't show up or respond to her texts, she became worried and decided to go with him. He said he went looking for him. Friends on Saturday morning, October 12th.

At the campsite, she found him dead in his tent. It was initially believed that Jelsem had been mauled to death by a bear until authorities determined he had died. Murder case.

In a conversation with law enforcement, Jelsem's girlfriend told police, “He's not the type of person to start a confrontation,” according to the documents.

Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer previously described the murder as a “chance encounter,” adding that Jersem welcomed the alleged killer to his campsite and offered him a beer.

In her confession, Abby told authorities that at one point her dog jumped on Jelsem's air mattress, leaving muddy footprints all over it. He said he apologized to Jersem and wiped off the footprints on the mattress.

According to court documents, the suspect claimed that “Jelsem stated that he was going to shoot his dog and then kill him.” Abby claimed that Jersem came towards him and she “tangled” with him.

According to the indictment, Abbey “hit the victim in the head with firewood, stabbed him in the neck with a screwdriver, and struck the victim in the face with the blunt side of an axe.”

According to court records, Abby confessed to washing the ax and screwdriver in a stream. The suspect also admitted taking Jersem's two cellphones and an ax, adding that he wiped the cellphone because he was worried about fingerprints. He told authorities that the day after the murder, he returned to the crime scene to retrieve a beanie he had left behind and to check for “unfinished business.”

“This is the action of a guilty subject who thought he could get away with murder,” Springer previously said.

During the investigation, authorities said Abby told employees at the popular Big Sky Resort and a nearby restaurant about her past prison days and made “white supremacist comments,” according to court records. I realized that I had made him feel uncomfortable.
