Police Shooting in Pennsylvania Leaves Three Officers Dead
The man suspected of shooting three officers dead and injuring two others in Pennsylvania was wanted for stalking and trespassing, according to reports. Matthew James Ruth, age 24, allegedly opened fire on a rural farm in York County on Wednesday before being shot by police. Details were shared by anonymous law enforcement sources since they weren’t authorized to publicly discuss the ongoing investigation.
The conflict erupted shortly after Ruth faced charges related to stalking and trespassing, following a domestic investigation that had started the day before. The two wounded officers are currently hospitalized and described as critically injured but stable. York County District Attorney Tim Barker has indicated that more updates will be provided Thursday at 3 p.m.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his condolences during a press conference, calling it a “tragic and devastating day” for York County and the state. He emphasized the loss of three dedicated lives and the need for prayers for those recovering from their injuries.
Support from the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Pennsylvania State Police is being provided to local authorities. This shooting incident follows a previous occasion earlier this year when another officer in York County lost their life in the line of duty.
Governor Shapiro also mentioned that Attorney General Pam Bondy had reached out to him, stressing that full federal support is being extended in response to the incident. Bondy condemned the violence, labeling it as an unacceptable tragedy against society.
The shooting took place on a rural road in central Pennsylvania, not far from Maryland. A neighbor, Dark Anderson, recounted hearing numerous gunshots and noticed police and emergency helicopters arriving shortly afterward.
About 30 police vehicles have cordoned off roads in the area, which features barns, goat farms, as well as fields of soybeans and corn. This part of North Codra Township is situated roughly 115 miles west of Philadelphia.
