Good morning, US politics blog readers. Broadly speaking, there are two groups of swing states expected to decide the presidential election: the Great Lakes states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and the Sun belt states of Nevada, Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina. The closely watched pollsters at the New York Times and Siena College today released new data from three of the latter group, showing Donald Trump preferred by voters over Kamala Harris, albeit to varying degrees. The poll finds the vice-president’s standing is weakest against Trump in Arizona, where she now has a five-point polling deficit after the same pollsters showed her with a five-point lead last month. The race in Georgia is tighter but the tightest state is North Carolina, which has not supported a Democratic candidate for president since 2008.

The survey is the latest sign of the the presidential race remaining in toss-up territory two months after Harris took over as the Democratic candidate from Joe Biden. The Times and Siena College poll is just one data point among many others, but if its findings bear out, it would leave the vice-president reliant on the Great Lakes states as well as Nevada, the fourth Sun belt state that was not surveyed, or a single Nebraska congressional district to win the White House.

Trump's second assassin suspect made multiple visits to golf courses, Mar-a-Lago area, prosecutors say
Two mobile phones were found in the car. Ryan Wesley Routh The location where he was driving when he was arrested was geographically located in a nearby area. Donald TrumpProsecutors wrote that the defendants had been held in custody at their Mar-a-Lago resort and at a golf course in Florida in the weeks before the alleged assassination attempt.
The phones were among six that FBI agents found in Routh's vehicle during repeated visits to the vicinity of two Trump properties between Aug. 18 and Sept. 15, according to court documents.
Investigators also tested an SKS rifle found in bushes outside the golf course where Trump was playing and found a fingerprint that matched Routh.
The rifle was found in bushes outside a fence near the sixth hole at the golf course, and prosecutors wrote that Trump was playing on the fifth hole when a Secret Service agent saw the rifle barrel protruding from the bushes and fired the weapon.
In addition to the rifle, prosecutors wrote, FBI agents found a backpack and a shopping bag attached to the fence that had plates “capable of intercepting small arms fire.”
FBI agents also investigated a book that Routh supposedly wrote in February 2023. Ukraine's Unwinnable War: Democracy's Fatal Flaws, Abandonment of the World, and Global Citizenship – Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea, World War III, and the End of HumanityAccording to court documents.
In the book, Rouse states:
must bear part of the responsibility [person] The man we chose to be our next president turned out to be a fool, but I am a man who can say I made a bad mistake and I apologize to Iran. Feel free to assassinate Trump and me for that error and for breaking the deal. No one in the US seems to have the guts to take advantage of natural or even unnatural selection.
In court documents filed today, prosecutors said suspect Ryan Wesley Routh placed the box at a witness' home months before he plotted to assassinate Donald Trump.
An anonymous witness learned of Routh's arrest and contacted police after opening the box, which, according to the prosecution, contained “ammunition, metal pipes, various building materials, tools, four telephones and various letters.”
One letter was addressed to “the world” and read in part:
This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, and I have let you down. I did my best and I put in all the courage I could muster. Now it's up to you to finish this job, and I am offering $150,000 to whoever gets the job done.
he [the former President] We ended our relationship with Iran like a child, and now the Middle East is in ruins.

Polls show Trump leading Harris in Sun Belt battleground states

The New York Times and Siena College New data from three of the latter groups was released today: Donald Trump Voters prefer Kamala HarrisTo varying degrees, the vice president's approval rating is the lowest for Trump. Polls show him trailing Trump by five points in Arizona; last month, the same pollsters showed him with a five-point lead, but now he's trailing by five points. The race is closer in Georgia, but the closest is North Carolina, which hasn't supported a Democratic candidate for president since 2008.
The poll is the latest sign that the presidential race remains in close territory, two months after Harris was sworn in as the Democratic nominee. Joe BidenThe Times/Siena College poll is just one piece of data, but if it holds up, the vice president would need to rely on the Great Lakes states and a fourth uncounted Sun Belt state, Nevada, or a single district in Nebraska to win the White House.
