A suspect has been apprehended in connection with the fatal shooting of a Missouri lawmaker, authorities reported on Tuesday.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol shared via social media that Richard Dean Byrd, aged 45, was taken into custody early Tuesday after the shooting incident involving a Christian County deputy that occurred around 4 p.m. on Monday.
The situation escalated as a search was initiated for an individual deemed armed and dangerous.
Authorities described the suspect as a bald white male, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing around 145 pounds, with brown eyes.
The vehicle linked to the suspect was identified as a white 2001 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab pickup truck with Missouri license plate 9MGX36. It was spotted near the crime scene and reportedly seen heading south from Route HH onto Route 160 in Christian County. This stretch of US 160 runs through southern Missouri, connecting to northern Arkansas east of Harrison.
“The truck has been located,” stated the Stone County Sheriff’s Office, which assisted in the search, on social media Monday night.
Several congressional members reacted to the lawmaker’s tragic death.
“A deputy was shot and killed in my home county today. Erin and I are praying for his family. May justice be served quickly,” stated Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, in a message to Fox News Digital.
Senator Eric Schmidt mentioned the event as a “devastating loss for Christian County,” expressing his condolences. “My prayers are with the deputy’s loved ones, as well as those who worked alongside him to protect Missourians while local law enforcement seeks to bring the suspect to justice,” he posted on social media.
Congressman Jamie Ray Gragg shared, “My heart breaks for the Congressman’s family. They recognized the risks that come with this line of work, but this senseless act is something they can hardly comprehend.”
Blue Alerts are typically issued under similar circumstances to Amber Alerts but are specifically for situations involving suspects who have seriously harmed or killed law enforcement officers and potentially remain a threat to the public.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol announced early Tuesday morning that the Blue Alert had been canceled now that the suspect is in custody.
