Suspect killed following attack on Greenville police officer in patrol car

Officer Ambushed in Greenville, South Carolina

A police officer in Greenville, South Carolina, was ambushed while sitting in his patrol car. A suspect drove up beside him and opened fire, an incident documented by surveillance video, which ultimately led to the suspect’s death.

Footage released by the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) shows a vehicle pulling into a parking lot and halting alongside the officer’s patrol car. Moments later, gunfire erupted, injuring the officer inside. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and was later discharged.

Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis mentioned that officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle afterward and initiated a brief chase.

During this pursuit, there were exchanges of gunfire, concluding in a crash where the suspect was found deceased in the vehicle. The suspect has been identified as David William Lane, aged 42.

“This incident was an ambush against City of Greenville employees,” Lewis stated.

The sheriff’s office indicated that there had been preliminary contact with Lane before the ambush took place, with community members raising concerns about his erratic behavior on January 1 and 2.

Deputies looked into these complaints and while they found his actions concerning, they did not warrant criminal charges at that time.

In response, the management of the Hunting Downs apartment complex decided to hire off-duty security personnel beginning January 8, aiming to ensure the residents’ safety.

A resident’s mother shared security footage with local news that showed Lane approaching her daughter’s apartment while carrying a firearm, claiming he had been stalking her daughter and making threatening remarks.

SLED has been called in by both the Greenville Police Department and the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an independent investigation into the ambush. They are expected to carry out thorough witness interviews and forensic examinations before presenting their findings to prosecutors. As of now, there are no further details available.

This incident marks the second officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year, and notably the first for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. In 2025, SLED recorded 45 officer-involved shootings in the state, seven of which involved sheriff’s offices.
