Police said the suspect was in custody. Local media reported that the car was driving at high speed in a crowd at Paradeplatz Square in Mannheim, according to Reuters.

German Home Minister Nancy Phèser cancelled his participation in the Carnival Street Parade in Cologne due to an event in Mannheim.

“The focus is now on saving lives, dealing with the injured and dealing with the initial investigation by Mannheim authorities,” a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry told DPA News Agency.

The incident comes weeks after the death of a two-year-old girl and her mother in a car charge attack in Munich.

German prosecutors later said the 24-year-old Afghan suspect in the Munich case appeared to have been motivated by Islamic extremism.

Last year, six people were killed and more than 200 were injured when a car was hit at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, East Germany.
