Charlie Kirk Assassination Suspect Appears in Court
The young man suspected of attempting to assassinate Charlie Kirk, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, appeared in a Utah courtroom on Tuesday afternoon.
During a virtual session, Robinson was visible on the screen wearing what appeared to be a bulletproof vest. The only remark he made was to confirm his name, stating, “Tyler James Robinson.”
In a statement that raised eyebrows, he asserted, “I had the opportunity to take Charlie Kirk out and I’m going to take it.”
The judge assessed Robinson’s financial status, determining that he was “poor,” and appointed a public defender to represent him. Additionally, the judge decided that Robinson would remain in custody without the possibility of bail.
A member of the prosecution team revealed that a pretrial protection order had been filed for Erica Kirk, Charlie’s widow, which the judge approved. Furthermore, it was announced that the state intends to pursue the death penalty against Robinson.
As the judge listed the charges against Robinson, he was formally introduced as a suspect just two hours prior, according to Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray.
The charges include aggravated murder for using a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury, as well as charges related to the discharge of a firearm during a felony. Gray mentioned in a press conference that “aggravating factors” were involved, indicating that Robinson “targeted Kirk knowing a child would be present,” and that the attempt was motivated by Kirk’s “political expression” as the founder of TPUSA.
Additional charges include:
- One count of obstruction of justice for allegedly moving and hiding rifles used in the shooting.
- One count of obstruction of justice for disposing of clothing worn during the incident.
- One count of tampering with evidence by directing his roommate to delete incriminating text messages.
- One count of witness tampering for instructing his roommate to remain silent if questioned by police.
- One count of committing a violent crime in the presence of a child, recognizing that the child saw or heard the murder due to Kirk’s “political expressions.”
After reading the charges, the judge called for a recess and scheduled the next hearing for September 29 at 10 am.
Earlier reports noted that Gray received texts from Robinson’s transgender roommate, who was advised to examine notes left under a keyboard. The texts reportedly included, “I had the opportunity to take Charlie Kirk out. I’m going to take it.”
Gray also confirmed that Robinson was in a relationship with his biologically male roommate, who is transitioning to female. This text chain seems to challenge the narrative portraying Robinson solely as a right-wing agent based on family background.
