Three Iranians Charged with Espionage in the UK
Three individuals from Iran have been accused of spying on behalf of Tehran during a counterterrorism investigation. They reportedly entered the UK illegally before seeking asylum.
On Saturday, the Metropolitan Police announced charges against Farhad Javadi Manesh, 44, and two others, Chapor Kalehari Kani Nouri and another Chapor Kalehari Kani Nouri, aged 39 and 55 respectively. These charges stem from their alleged actions supporting foreign intelligence operations, specifically for Iran.
A report from Telecommunications cites an unnamed prosecutor from the Crown Prosecutor’s Office (CPS) indicating that the trio illegally arrived in the UK, possibly through immigration ships or concealed in a truck. Once they reached the country, at least one attempted to claim asylum, causing some suspicion.
It was noted in court that one of the accused, Sepahand, had entered the UK covertly in 2016. Manesh, who allegedly crossed the waterway to land unlawfully on British shores in December 2019, also sought asylum based on religious grounds.
Nouri reportedly first interacted with law enforcement in 2022 after his illegal entry and subsequently applied for asylum. They were all allowed to stay in the UK while their asylum claims were pending.
The incidents of their illegal entry were reported by sources such as the BBC and Sky News.
The three Iranians are set to be held and face accusations in the coming month at the Old Bailey Court regarding violations of national security laws.
In addition to being linked to foreign intelligence support, Sepahand is also accused of conducting surveillance at the BBC, which is an Iranian international media outlet based in London. The intention behind this surveillance was allegedly to commit violence against journalists.
Meanwhile, Manesh and Nouri face allegations of assisting in surveillance that could lead to violence against British citizens.
On Saturday, Interior Secretary Yvette Cooper noted that the government intends to bolster counter-terrorism efforts in light of these arrests. She emphasized that the charges must be processed through the criminal justice system without impacting their outcomes but acknowledged the need for stronger national security measures in response to this situation.
