Suspected people smugglers arrested in Texas for concealing migrants in hollow hay bales

Human Smuggler Arrested Using Modified Hay Bales

This week, a suspected human smuggler was arrested in Texas after officials uncovered attempts to hide migrants inside modified hay bales. Lawmakers who routinely stop traffic in the area near Flatnier noticed that the hay trailer was altered to create compartments, as reported by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon further inspection, deputies discovered people concealed within the bales, cramped in what was described as a “dangerously limited space” beneath metal frames and layers of hay. The sheriff’s office condemned this method as not only deceptive but also incredibly hazardous. “Smugglers consistently use increasingly dangerous and creative techniques to transport individuals across Texas highways,” they stated.

Details of the Arrest

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stepped in, calling on the Border Patrol’s Sector Intelligence Unit when they found discrepancies while questioning the drivers and passengers of the pickup truck. Ultimately, twelve migrants were discovered hidden within the hay.

A Kansas driver, Delbert Flanders, aged 44, was hospitalized for treatment. Meanwhile, suspects Adanairo Lambert, 22, and Rency Delgado Fernandez, 25, were apprehended and now face federal and state charges related to human smuggling.

The immigrants have been handed over to the U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) for processing. In a separate incident on May 15, two human smugglers were sentenced following a series of high-speed chases near the border, highlighting ongoing challenges in tackling this issue.

Consequences for Smugglers

Samuel Grajeda Jr. received a 30-month prison sentence, while Juan Miguel Legalad was given a 66-month sentence. Both individuals will also be subject to a three-year supervised release period.
