Suspected sabotage on Italy's railways during the Milan Cortina Olympics

Railroad Sabotage Disrupts Winter Olympics in Italy

The Bureau of Consular Affairs for the U.S. State Department reported on Saturday that a railroad linked to the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics was damaged in what is being described as an act of sabotage on Friday.

According to the agency, early Saturday saw damages to high-speed train routes, including those between Rome-Naples, Rome-Florence, and Rome-Milan. This information was later confirmed by the Italian government.

Back on February 13, Italian authorities had announced an increase in safety measures aimed at minimizing disruptions to the railway network during the Winter Olympics. These measures involve more frequent patrols along the tracks and heightened monitoring of railway services.

“If you’re planning to travel by train, it’s advisable to steer clear of areas experiencing disruptions and exercise caution. Stay informed about the situation and consider leaving affected areas promptly,” the agency emphasized in their statement.

Officials are currently looking into the burnt cable associated with the incident. Reports indicate that similar sabotage issues have occurred in previous events, with a cable severed and explosives found between Bologna and Venice.

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini expressed strong condemnation of the acts, labeling them as criminal. He stated, “These are hateful criminal acts targeting workers and Italy. No one should downplay or attempt to justify these crimes that put lives at risk.”

The national police have classified these incidents as definite criminal acts. As authorities continue their investigation, travelers are advised to proceed with caution and allow for additional travel time.

Interestingly, during previous tournaments, officials had assured the public that such acts would not tarnish Italy’s image or influence the overall success of the games. Salvini remarked then that these events would instead highlight Italy’s resilience and appeal on the world stage.

The Olympic events are set to conclude on February 22, marking just a week from now. It’s certainly a tense time, with everyone hoping for a safe and successful finish to the Winter Games amid these challenges.
