Suspected suicide bombing in Moscow results in the death of a police officer, attacker killed in the explosion

An unidentified individual set off an explosive device near a police vehicle in Moscow early Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of both the attacker and a police officer, as reported by the Associated Press.

Officials stated that two additional police officers sustained injuries from the blast.

The explosion occurred soon after midnight near the Savyorovsky train station in central Moscow, according to information from the Ministry of Interior’s Moscow office.

Reports indicate that the perpetrator was a 22-year-old man from Udmurtia, a region in Russia, with an investigation into the reasons behind the attack currently underway.

According to various sources, the assailant approached a traffic police officer stationed in a patrol car. The targeted vehicle was reported to have suffered significant damage, though no fire resulted from the explosion.

In a meeting with senior officials from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), President Putin noted that the attacker was allegedly recruited online and received explosives, possibly without fully understanding their purpose, which were detonated remotely.

This incident coincided with the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Attempts by the previous U.S. administration to negotiate a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine have not yet resulted in an agreement.
