SUV driver plows into 2 woman, killing 1, during NYC police chase

A 71-year-old woman was killed Thursday night when the driver of an SUV fleeing from police struck a 71-year-old woman as she crossed the street with her daughter in Brooklyn, witnesses and law enforcement officials said.

The victim’s 44-year-old daughter was also injured when she was struck by a blue Mazda CX-5 with a Massachusetts license plate at Eldert Street and Knickerbocker Avenue in Bushwick around 5 p.m., police and officials said. announced.

The elderly woman was taken to Wyckoff Hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.

Her daughter was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition.

After hitting the victims, the ponytailed driver fled the scene on foot toward the Halsey Street subway station, New York City police said, but it was unclear whether he went underground.

He was also wearing a blue T-shirt and blue jeans, according to preliminary information from police.

Surveillance camera footage obtained by the newspaper shows a blue SUV speeding eastbound on Eldert Street through the intersection, followed just seconds later by a red SUV on Knickerbocker Street as police cars follow. The video shows him almost colliding with a car.

Witnesses also said they saw police cars chasing the Mazda leading up to the accident.

“This car was very fast when the police were chasing it,” said Sandra Villaman, pointing to the Mazda that crashed.

“I saw two women lying on the floor,” the woman said, adding that paramedics tried to resuscitate them at the scene.

The owner of the white van hit by a Mazda in a hit-and-run incident described the sight he saw when he came out of his apartment after hearing the crash as “sad and painful.”

“I went outside and saw my van pinned up against a tree, so I ran over and saw the women on the floor,” witness Rodrigo Gonzalez said.

“One of them was having convulsions… They were performing CPR on the older woman, but the man had already fled.”
