A New York City man is believed to have been drunk in an SUV driving along railroad tracks, causing the vehicle to burst into flames, police said.
According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department, Basilio Hidalgo, 40, drove an SUV onto the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train at about 4:52 p.m. Sunday, causing a tire on the vehicle to catch fire and cause a fire. Afterwards, it was announced that he had been arrested and charged. in release.
Photos taken immediately after the accident showed Hidalgo's SUV being hoisted off the tracks by a crane.

MTAPD said Hidalgo traveled approximately “half a mile east” on the railroad tracks, where two of the vehicle's tires sustained “significant damage” and caught fire, causing it to stop.
“Officers with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department observed a black Honda sport utility vehicle stopped on the LIRR mainline tracks between Belrose and Floral Park stations,” MTAPD said.
“Detectives determined that the suspect drove onto the LIRR Main Line tracks from above ground west of the Elmont-UBS Arena Station.”
The driver eventually stopped “just east of Belrose station” when the fire broke out.
