A man riding his bicycle on a Brooklyn street on Sunday morning was killed when an out-of-control SUV struck him and crashed into a parked car seconds later, police said.
According to authorities, around 11:30 a.m., the driver of a black Volkswagen SUV was traveling north on Union Street near Lynch Street in Williamsburg when he struck a 46-year-old man who was riding a bicycle coming from the same direction.
Police said the driver, a 40-year-old man, struck a man on a bicycle before crashing into an unoccupied white Honda Odyssey parked on the side of the road.
The bicyclist was rushed to Kings County Hospital where he later died from his injuries, and the driver of the Volkswagen was also taken to the same hospital in stable condition.
video Obtained by Williamsburg News Brakes can be heard screeching just before the black SUV plows into the white one, and news outlets' footage shows the black car pushes the white one for at least several hundred feet before both come to a stop.
Police said the investigation is ongoing by the NYPD's Highway Crash Investigation Unit and that no arrests have been made so far.
City Councilman Lincoln Ressler Called the latest cyclist He called the death “tragic” and called for making New York's streets safer.
“We will continue to work for safer streets on every block,” Ressler, a Democrat, tweeted.
“More bicyclists were killed in New York City last year than in the past 25 years. With a protected lane network, these fatalities could be prevented.”
