Swalwell Suggests Legal Counsel for FCC Chairman Amid Kimmel Controversy

On Thursday, Democrat Eric Swalwell from California made a statement urging Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Kerr to “get a lawyer.” This advice came in light of the possibility that Democrats may regain a majority in Congress in the near future.

The context for Swalwell’s comments stems from recent remarks made by Kerr regarding a tragic incident involving Charlie Kirk, which ignited a firestorm among Democrats. They have been pressuring ABC to take action against comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

“I want to set the record straight; we will have a Democratic majority in just over a year,” Swalwell declared during the hearing. “Anyone entangled in these questionable dealings with the FCC chairman should consider legal representation and keep documentation because all eyes are on you now.”

In response to Kirk’s death, Republican officials expressed indignation and committed to addressing celebratory comments surrounding the incident.

Kerr has openly criticized media networks that haven’t opted to preempt Kimmel’s show. He pointed out that both ABC and Nexstar Media Group should be reconsidering their programming in light of community standards. “Local broadcasters have a duty to act in the public interest,” Kerr remarked, noting that this decision, though perhaps unprecedented, is necessary for the community’s welfare.

Democratic lawmakers, however, pushed back vehemently against the idea of Kimmel’s removal, labeling it a troubling form of censorship. Some members of Congress have even called for Kerr’s resignation due to threats he made regarding revoking ABC’s affiliate license unless action was taken against Kimmel during a podcast discussion.

“Brendan Kerr, the chairman of the so-called Federal Communications Commission, is abusing his power,” stated prominent House Democrat House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. He went on to criticize Kerr for allegedly bullying ABC and yielding to pressure from the Trump administration.

Jeffries also mentioned that it would be appropriate for Kerr to resign, describing the Republican approach to the situation as contradictory to American values. This statement was supported by key figures, including Minority Whip Catherine Laughterk from Massachusetts and other prominent Democrats.

California Representative Robert Garcia shared his intent to initiate an investigation into Kimmel’s removal, considering himself the leading Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
