Swalwell Criticizes Trump Amid FBI Investigation
California Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell has accused former President Donald Trump of attempting to meddle in the gubernatorial race due to new findings related to the Chinese espionage issue. This follows reports that the FBI is eyeing the release of documents about Swalwell’s past interactions with a woman alleged to have connections to Chinese intelligence.
In the past, Swalwell’s re-election efforts in 2014 were reportedly bolstered by Christine Fang, who allegedly had ties to Chinese intelligence. She even helped place an intern in Swalwell’s office.
“The reason Trump is so intent on undermining me isn’t just because I’m in the governor’s race,” Swalwell remarked. “It’s because I’m currently the frontrunner.” He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and contends that Republicans are amplifying the issue to tarnish his political reputation.
On Saturday, news outlets reported that FBI Director Kash Patel is pursuing the release of files concerning the investigation into Fang. Swalwell reacted by reiterating his claims about the matter.
He referenced dismissed mortgage fraud allegations against him, saying, “Through diligent reporting, we’ve seen how targeting political opponents can yield wild outcomes in the White House. Like Trump’s mortgage lawsuit against me; that ten-year-old story is simply ridiculous.”
“What Trump desires more than anything is a supportive presence in a Western White House. Many have given in to this administration, but I refuse, and the citizens of California will not either,” he added.
An FBI spokesperson, however, denied any political motivations behind the decision to release the files. “This FBI has been the most transparent in history, providing documents for a variety of reasons, which includes releasing them for further review by agencies and departments from previous administrations,” the spokesperson informed The Washington Post.
In recent polling, Swalwell appears to be leading among Democratic candidates for governor, even though he still trails behind the two Republican candidates in the race.
Fang has also been linked to other Democratic figures in California, including Representatives Ro Khanna and Judy Chu, as well as former Representative Mike Honda.
