Swalwell Discusses Government Funding and Shutdowns
In a recent interview, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif) shared his thoughts on why it’s important for the government to resist GOP funding strategies that could lead to shutdowns.
“Why should we keep co-signing on this madness that harms our friends and neighbors and ultimately reflects poorly on America?” Swalwell remarked during his conversation with CNN’s Kate Bouldan on “CNN News Central.”
He noted that, “This is a Republican-run government. They’ve got the White House, the House, and the Senate. They had plenty of time to collaborate on legislation that could pass. Instead, they waited until the last moment.” He mentioned former President Trump’s indecision regarding meetings, emphasizing that the responsibility lies with the GOP. “I don’t want to be an accomplice to this tyranny,” he added.
The House has approved funding measures aimed at keeping the government operational through most of November, but the Senate needs to secure 60 votes for the bill to pass.
However, some opposition is expected, including from Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), who is likely to oppose what is referred to as a “clean” continuing resolution that primarily expands existing funding.
Democrats have voiced their concerns about these funding measures, as they wish to address the subsidies linked to the Affordable Care Act, which are set to expire soon. Party leaders feel pressured to push back against the Trump administration after previous agreements on GOP funding.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has been ramping up pressure on Democrats. White House press director Karoline Leavitt warned of impending layoffs if lawmakers fail to avert a shutdown by Tuesday, following orders from Trump’s Budget Office to prepare for potential job cuts.
Leavitt raised the question, “What happens if the Democrats don’t keep the government open?” in reference to the possible fallout from the closure.
Trump is also set to meet with leading congressional figures, including Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), with hopes of avoiding a shutdown.
“There’s nothing to negotiate when you have a clean CR,” Leavitt stated on Monday. “We are nearing both the shutdown and the funding deadline. The President is keen on keeping the government operational.”
Efforts have been made to contact the White House for further comments.
