WASHINGTON—Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, has been indicted on federal mortgage and tax fraud charges linked to his acquisition of a $1.2 million home in Washington, D.C., which he stated was his primary residence, as confirmed by The Post.
In a letter addressed to Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday, Bill Pruitt, the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, requested an inquiry into Swalwell due to allegations that he provided false and misleading information regarding the home purchase. This was first reported by NBC News.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Swalwell managed to secure significant mortgage loans and refinancing deals based on his claim that he lived in D.C. as his main residence.
Officials indicated that the charges could include mortgage fraud, tax fraud at various levels, and insurance fraud.
Alongside the criminal referral from the Justice Department, the FHFA’s Inspector General is also examining the purported mortgage fraud.
“Being one of Donald Trump’s prominent critics over the last decade, and the only individual with an ongoing case against him, it’s surprising it took this long for them to target me,” Swalwell remarked in a statement.
The California congressman also noted, “Like others including James Comey and Adam Schiff, I won’t let fear dictate my actions in what was once a free country.” He emphasized he would continue his pursuit of the case against Trump as well as advocating for California residents.
“As Mark Twain mentioned, ‘Patriotism always supports one’s country and supports one’s government in times of need.’ Mr. President, step it up and improve,” he added.
A representative from the Justice Department chose not to comment on the matter.
