Well, a slight correction: there are some games in the third and fourth tier that have already fallen victim to frozen pitches, but with Swansea v Southampton already under way in the Championship, Bristol City taking on Watford and Tony Mowbray’s Birmingham going to Stoke and more there’s definitely enough to keep us footie addicts sated for a Saturday. In the WSL, Arsenal host Everton, there’s a boat-load of Scottish Cup games, the Bundesliga is on and it’s Group D all the way in Afcon this afternoon with Algeria v Burkina Faso and Mauritania v Angola a bit later.

important events

Gavin Bazunu While blocking Yannick Bolasie's header, he was kicked and fell into his own goal. The veteran winger, now 34, has given Swansea a boost since joining. The Saints will be given 5 minutes plus additional time to determine this.

Swansea missed two more big chances, somehow conspired to attack both posts when it seemed easy to score – certainly in the first case. Southampton had the upper hand virtually from start to finish in this game, but it should probably be a close one. Patterson and Patino will regret the mistake.

In Scotland today… (via reader Simon McMahon's email):

It's Scottish Cup weekend in Scotland, Dom. Two-time champions Dundee United have a big prize on their plate this season as they aim for promotion from the Scottish Championship, so they will miss out on the cup and give other teams dreams of Hampden glory. At least that's what I told myself after losing on penalties to Queen of the South in the final round.

Potential cup sets today include Airdrie, Forfar, Livingston and Ross County hosting St Johnstone, Hibs, Raith and Partick respectively. Aberdeen beat Clyde last night but Hearts needed a stoppage time winner to beat the Spartans in today's early kick-off.

Asia Cup: The match between Jordan and South Korea ended 2-2, contributing to both teams advancing from Group E to the final tournament (both teams won their first match). The match between Bahrain and Malaysia in the same group will begin soon.

Swansea 1-3 Southampton: Charlie Patino gave the Swans a golden opportunity. That would have definitely been a grandstand finish. At the other end, Che Adams appeared to stumble in the box, but Saints were denied a penalty…and VAR was also unable to review it.

Algeria v Burkina Faso The African Cup of Nations is about to begin. Your team is:

Algeria: Mandrea; Attal, Ait Nouri, Bensebani, Mandi. Bentaleb, Feghuri, Zerluki.Mahrez, Belail, Bouja

Burkina Faso: Kofi; Nagaro, Kabore, Taposova, Konate. Dayo, Tapsoba, Sangye.Thule, Gira, Yago

Swansea 1-3 Southampton: Russell Martin's return to south Wales has gone well so far. Bar Jamie Patterson's strike gave the Swans the complete advantage as the visitors scored three goals in the first half and remained in the ascendancy after the break. They've got Ryan Fraser, Che Adams, the Armstrong family (Adam and Stuart), they're a very strong championship team.

Update date and time

preamble

Premier League, what Premier League? Who needs the top flight? Well, not when there are African Cup of Nations matches, the thrill and excitement of the Football League, and so much more.

Well, let me make a slight correction. There are already some games in the third and fourth tiers that have fallen victim to frozen pitches, but Swansea vs Southampton has already started in the Championship, and Bristol City face Watford, with Tony Mowbray's side Birmingham will play Stoke and Stoke. Definitely enough to keep any soccer junkie satisfied on a Saturday. In the WSL, Arsenal host Everton, there's a pile of Scottish Cup games, the Bundesliga gets underway, and this afternoon there's Group D all the way at Afcon, with Algeria vs. Burkina Faso and Mauritania vs. Angola a little later.

Everyone agrees that the winter holidays are busy. The more football the better. Stay tuned for more team news and details regarding the troubling postponement.
